Glossary of Terms

  • BIPOC

    BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and people of color. Pronounced “bye-pock,” this is a term specific to the United States, intended to center the experiences of Black and Indigenous groups and demonstrate solidarity between communities of color.

  • ICI

    Intracervical insemination is a type of assisted reproduction when sperm is inserted in the cervix, which serves as the passageway to the uterus.

  • IUI

    Intrauterine insemination is a type of assisted reproduction used to treat infertility. Sperm is placed directly in the uterus in order for one or more eggs to be fertilized.

  • IVF

    In vitro fertilization is a series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child.

  • Perinatal

    The period occurring in, concerned with, or around the time of birth.

  • Perinatal loss

    The loss of pregnancy including by miscarriage, still birth and infant loss.

  • Postpartum

    The one year period following childbirth.

  • Prenatal

    The period of pregnancy prior to birth.

  • Single Parenthood by Choice

    An individual who chooses to become a parent without a partner. Often achieved through the use of a known donor, sperm bank donor, ICI, IUI, IVF or adoption.

  • Trying to conceive (TTC)

    Refers to a time period in which an individual or couple is actively trying to have a child.

  • Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C)

    Professionals with a minimum of two years of experience that have been specifically educated and trained to provide support to individuals in the perinatal population.

  • Termination for Medical Reasons (TFMR)

    The termination of a pregnancy, or an abortion, due to medical conditions identified in either the baby/fetus or pregnant person.
